Residential Sprinkers
Fire kills more people in the United states than all natural
disasters combined. In fact, more than 4,500 individuals perish in
fires each year, and 82% of those will die in their own homes!
Although smoke detectors are essential in every household, there
designed to detect, NOT control a fire. Home fire sprinklers
compliment the detectors' work, providing a way to fight flames
immediately.
Not only do home fire sprinklers dramatically reduce the risk of
home fire deaths, they also decrease the damage by as much as
two-thirds in residences with fire sprinklers when compared to those
without sprinklers. In the 10-year study on Scottsdale AZ, the
reduction was over 85%.
The effectiveness of sprinklers has also been recognized by the
insurance industry, with many carriers providing discounts from 2%
to 20% for automatic fire sprinklers in the home.
The Homer Township Fire Protection District is a strong advocate of
residential fire sprinkler systems. In September of 2000, the Fire
District with the help of the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler
Advisory Board, and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition hosted an open
house to promote and educate people on the benefits of a residential
sprinkler system.
Homeowner and Homer Fire Paid on Call Firefighter / Paramedic Mark
Krizik was installing a fire sprinkler system in his new home. He
allowed us to contact building officials and other fire departments
to view the installation of this system. Representatives were
available to answer questions regarding the National Fire Protection
Association Standard 13D-Residential Fire Sprinklers and show fire
sprinkler products available.
Building and fire officials from over 50 towns witnessed the fire
sprinkler installation and obtained information for their
communities.
The installation of fire sprinklers is very efficient and will not
prolong the construction of your home. The average cost including
material and labor is approximately $1.50 per square foot.
