The Homer Township Firefighter Local #4223 Honor Guard was formed in 2008. The Honor Guard was formed when the union decided there was a need for honor and patriotism within the local. A meeting was set up with the Fire Chief and then in February 2008 the Local and Fire District sent six members to Peoria Illinois to participate in the yearly Associated Firefighters of Illinois Honor Guard Convention. The convention is two days long, filled with training from drill and ceremony to casket guard. Up to date the Honor Guard has grown to twelve members.
Although the A.F.F.I. Honor Guard is mainly to honor fallen firefighters the members of the Homer Township Firefighters Honor Guard participate in events throughout the district. Events include but are not limited to: swearing in ceremonies, promotion ceremonies, 9-11 ceremonies, and department member weddings. The members of the Honor Guard receive no monetary compensation for events but the Fire District does contribute funds to help support the financial side of running the Homer Township Honor Guard.
The most recent event the Homer Township Honor Guard participated in was the tragic loss of Firefighter Brian Carey.
